City of Mt. Pleasant issued the following announcement on March 14.
The City of Mount Pleasant issued an update on the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) and its impact on the use of city facilities following the declaration of a national state of emergency by President Trump and a state of disaster for Texas by Governor Abbott. Facilities include Mount Pleasant sports fields, parks and pavilions, the civic center, public library and regional airport for events.
“Canceling activities or closing ball fields is not an action we take lightly, but we believe it is in the best interest of the community as we deal with a situation and possible threat that is changing hourly,” said City Manager Ed Thatcher. “We are committed to doing our part to help keep people safe and not exposed to significant health risks. The suspension of non-essential or leisure activities helps to mitigate any potential spread of the virus.”
Following is the status of city facilities at this time:
LIBRARY
- All events, programs and activities are canceled through April 30. The cancellations may be extended past April 30 if necessary.
- The library will currently remain open during normal hours. This is subject to change if a patron or staff person of the library/city, or person within the vicinity of the library/Mount Pleasant, tests positive for COVID-19. Anyone who feels they may be sick should stay home.
CIVIC CENTER:
- All City-sponsored events, programs and activities are canceled through April 30. The cancellations may be extended past April 30 if necessary.
- Privately-booked functions are canceled immediately.
- Customers may change their reservations to a later date beginning after April 30 or any extended deadline, or they may cancel without any fees or penalties. Any deposits or fees already paid on reservations that are canceled will be refunded.
- No new reservations will be taken at this time.
PARKS & RECREATION:
Fields
- Organized sports team use of city-owned fields including soccer and baseball fields is suspended until April 1 or any necessary extended deadline. This includes practices and games.
- Privately-booked functions may proceed at the customer’s discretion and liability at this time. Anyone who feels they may be sick is urged to stay home.
- Customers may change their reservations to a later date beginning after April 30 or any extended deadline, or they may cancel without any fees or penalties. Any deposits or fees already paid on reservations that are canceled will be refunded.
- No new reservations will be taken at this time.
- Facilities such as Playgrounds, Trails, Public Restrooms
- Such facilities currently remain open during normal hours. This is subject to change if a park user or staff person of the parks department/city, or person within the vicinity of a specific park, tests positive for COVID-19. Anyone who feels they may be sick should stay home.
REGIONAL AIRPORT EVENTS:
- All City-sponsored events, programs and activities are canceled through April 30. The cancellations may be extended past April 30 if necessary.
- Privately-booked functions are canceled immediately.
- Customers may change their reservations to a later date beginning after April 30 or any extended deadline, or they may cancel without any fees or penalties. Any deposits or fees already paid on reservations that are canceled will be refunded.
- No new reservations will be taken at this time.
CITY MEETINGS:
- Meetings that are non-essential such as certain boards or commissions will be canceled until further notice.
- Staff and councilmembers are encouraged to hold all one-on-one meetings via telephone/teleconferencing.
- City Council meetings will continue as scheduled at this time.
