CITY OF MT. PLEASANT: A message from Mayor Tray Craig, Sr.

Message

City of Mt. Pleasant issued the following announcement.

On behalf of the City of Mount Pleasant, I want to extend our condolences to the family and friends of Dorisula (Sue) Hawkins, who passed away on Sunday, May 17, at the age of 78.

Dr. Hawkins holds an important place in our City’s history and in our hearts as the first African American female to ever serve on City Council. During her tenure from 2014 to 2016, she demonstrated her strong commitment to Mount Pleasant, where she was raised and was currently living with her husband of 56 years, Howard Hawkins.

A retired educator and professor of more than 30 years, Dr. Hawkins was also an active member of Mt. Olive Baptist church and other organizations. Private funeral services will be held at Mt. Olive Baptist Church on Saturday, May 23 at 11 a.m. with Pastor Kirthell Roberts officiating. Burial will be held at Piney Cemetery.
