Rep. Pat Fallon has introduced the Safeguard American Innovation Act in Washington, DC. The legislation aims to protect U.S. technology from foreign threats, particularly those posed by China.
Rep. Fallon stated, "The ‘Safeguard American Innovation Act’ is vital to securing our nation’s technology and deterring foreign threats, particularly from China. Recent cyberattacks like SolarWinds and Salt Typhoon have shown how vulnerable our defense and IT systems are to foreign interference. This bill will take action to prevent this by blocking any Department of Defense (DOD) contracts with companies tied to China that could jeopardize our national security."
He further explained the risks associated with Chinese laws: “China’s laws force companies to share sensitive technology, including software source code, posing a serious risk.” Rep. Fallon emphasized that the bill would prohibit contracts with companies operating in China or funded by the People’s Republic of China (PRC), or those allowing China access to critical code.
According to Rep. Fallon, "this bill helps ensure our IT infrastructure remains secure and our technological advancements stay out of adversaries' hands." He stressed the importance of the legislation for protecting American innovation and maintaining U.S. technological leadership.
The introduction of this bill reflects ongoing concerns about cybersecurity threats and national security related to foreign entities.
