Today, Representative Pat Fallon of Texas introduced the Rescinding Offshore Wind Tax Credit Act. This legislation aims to eliminate the production and investment tax credits for offshore wind facilities located in the inland navigable waters or coastal waters of the United States.
Rep. Fallon expressed concerns about the impact of offshore wind farms on military operations, stating, "Offshore wind farms threaten military readiness by disrupting radar systems, such as the Cape Cod Space Force Station's early missile detection radar." He emphasized that these turbines could interfere with threat detection, delay military responses, and hinder Coast Guard operations.
He also highlighted economic concerns, noting that "the U.S. risks up to $429.9 billion in tax credits primarily benefiting foreign-based companies," while domestic industries like fishing, manufacturing, and tourism may suffer. Rep. Fallon warned that high electricity costs could impede economic growth and result in job losses outweighing new opportunities in the wind sector.
Environmental and health risks were also mentioned by Rep. Fallon, who cited pollution, harm to marine life, and potential contamination from turbine failures as significant issues. He concluded by stating that disallowing tax credits for these projects would prioritize national security, economic health, and environmental preservation.
