The new plan for downtown Paris as revealed by the city has drawn criticism from the Paris Chamber of commerce for measures such as hiding deteriorating structures instead of dealing with them and replacing decade-old stop lights with stop signs.
A recent post to the Chamber’s website details portions of the plan with which issue is being taken, such as the “vegetative screen” that the city proposes to install along the western edge of Market Square in order to block the view of buildings on 2nd Street Southwest. There is also a question as to what constitutes “appropriate” retailers, which the plan calls for encouraging.
The Chamber does not completely object to all elements of the plan, but the indication of the post is that the chamber does not view the effort to create a plan for downtown has been successful.
“Forgive our doubts and fears,” the post states. “But what’s the objective? To be another Sulphur Springs, Commerce, or dozens of other towns struggling for the same identity?”
