There were 13 American Indian students enrolled in Chisum ISD schools in the 2022-23 school year, the same number as the previous year, according to the Texas Education Agency.

Data showed that Chisum ISD schools welcomed 1,179 students during the 2022-23 school year. Among them, American Indian students comprised 1.1% of the student body to be one of the least represented ethnicities in the district.

Chisum ISD roughly covers schools within Lamar County and has a main office in Paris.

Among the three schools in Chisum ISD schools, Chisum High School recorded the highest enrollment of American Indian students in the 2022-23 school year, with a total of six students.

The Texas education system is currently torn between public schools and taxpayer-funded private schools.

Critics argue that private schools use funds that should go to the public school system, while private school advocates claim they’re offering better education for more Texas students.
